INTJ - Mastermind

Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging

INTJs spend much of their time making sense of the world using their intuition. Applying their logic, they find associations between events, generate possibilities, and test theoretical models against reality. They have exceptional insight, as they are not only quick to understand a complex idea but also proficient in finding its validity and usefulness.

Their primary drive is to translate ideas into a plan that is beneficial to the system. Because INTJs reach their conclusions after much internal analysis, they are confident of their decisions. They are often found in science and engineering. Those who can feign some level of conformity can become business leaders and political figures.

Other people may have difficulty getting to know INTJs, due to their complexity and distaste for superficial social rituals. However, many find their reserved power, intelligence, and enigmatic nature to be attractive. INTJs form relationships that are honest, stable, and meaningful. They can bring the couple to an exceptional level of closeness and understanding.

Unlike Instincts compatibility, Personality compatibility is largely based on personal preference. However, general patterns do exist. Many INTJs find themselves to be most compatible with ENFPs and ENTPs. Generally speaking, they prefer long-term relationships with Intuitive and Perceiving types. More on compatibility can be found under the "In Relationships" tab.

About 2% of the U.S. population is INTJ.

INTJ Personality

Mastermind

INTJs spend much of their time making sense of the world using their intuition. Applying their logic, they find associations between events, generate possibilities, and test theoretical models against reality. They have exceptional insight, as they are not only quick to understand a complex idea but also proficient in finding its validity and usefulness.

Their primary drive is to translate ideas into a plan that is beneficial to the system. The system that they are advancing may be the world, their work, or their personal life. Strategic planning comes naturally to the INTJ, as they are perpetually weighing new strategies against the current strategy and analyzing possible contingencies. They seek conclusion and organization in the concept so that they can make a judgment and take action.

The INTJs' drive to create the best strategy is guided by their ethics, which is derived from applying their feelings inward and simultaneously using their intuition to “search” for what is ultimately right and wrong. Extremely pragmatic, they are willing to accept less consequential "wrongs" so long as their ends are met with a greater "right." In their loyalty to righteousness, they pay little attention to people's feelings, popularity, traditions, and authority. Their ethics are reflected in the blueprints of society’s major institutions, such as business, politics, and academia.

In their daily lives, they are usually working towards a few broad range goals. They see reality as both the testing grounds and product of theories. To them, reality could be easily changed or conquered. All of their daily activities, such as researching a topic or socializing, are in some way or another related to their goals. Meanwhile, socializing for its own sake is seen as a waste of time. In fact, they usually do not fully engage with someone who is not their intellectual equal. Instead, they are known to adopt either a professional or a sarcastic style of communication.

Because INTJs reach their conclusions after much internal analysis, they are confident of their decisions. Criticism or praise from friends or authority figures will have little influence on their actions. In addition, since each INTJ has a highly individualized form of thought that may be difficult to translate to others, they tend to only convey what the other person needs to know rather than the whole story. As a result, INTJs project an aura of aloofness and self-confidence. This self-confidence can sometimes be mistaken for arrogance by those less insightful.

However, because INTJs see the practical value in expressing their ideas and because of their extreme respect for intelligence, most are motivated to explain their thoughts in a structured manner to those they deem worthy of the effort. Those who have tailored their language to others can become terrific orators. Using metaphors and witty logic, they can express their viewpoints in a stirring speech or under the guise of a joke.

The INTJs' tremendous insight and need for organization make them excel in science and engineering, where they can help society by expressing their ideas into plans that others can follow. The INTJs who choose to invest time in their communication skills and who are willing to display some degree of conformism can become influential business leaders, military leaders, and political figures.

Their Cognitive Functions

1. (I)ntroverted I(N)tuition: the ability to perceive the unconscious world and see the underlying patterns behind events. As their second function, INTJs have insight into people and situations.

2. Extraverted (T)hinking: the ability to apply logic and order to the external world. As their primary function, INTJs can solve challenges logically and decisively, putting them in positions of leadership.

3. Introverted Feeling: the ability to form emotional conclusions that act as a source of ethics, ideals, and moral vision. As their tertiary function, INTJs have a moderately developed ideals and values system.

4. Extraverted Sensing: the ability to pick up on immediate details of the surroundings and grasp how it fits into the rest of the environment. As their inferior function, INTJs dislike carrying out mundane, daily tasks and need ample time to prepare before acting.

Instincts and Myers Briggs

Project Evolove's Instincts determine two people's compatibility while Myers-Briggs personalities determine their day-to-day interactions. Although MBTI dating is a popular concept, it does not accurately predict compatibility when used without Instincts.

INTJ Relationships

Mastermind

Before a Relationship

Compared to the other types, INTJs typically develop romantic relationships slightly later in life. This may be due to several different reasons. For one, INTJs do not inherently adhere to social rituals, as flirtation and small talk are viewed as obligatory rather than pleasurable. In addition, INTJs place a high focus on education and career, placing little thought on relationships until they feel that they have the time. Finally, they do not naturally display their emotions, which can be mistaken by others for a lack of affection or disinterest.

As INTJs mature, they generally excel in their area of expertise. This translates into more overall confidence. Likewise, they may begin observing more social rituals when they can reconcile the value of understanding social behaviors with their heftier objectives in life. Others may find their reserved power, intelligence, and enigmatic nature to be attractive.

When searching for a partner, they can be quite logical about their choice. Due to their strong intuition, they can usually tell within seconds whether or not someone can be a potential mate. Others may interpret this as being dismissive, when in reality they are being honest.

During a Relationship

INTJs form relationships that are honest, stable, and meaningful. They can bring the couple to an exceptional level of closeness and understanding. Few people besides their intimate partners will be able to appreciate the INTJ's level of depth and complexity.

INTJ's are not naturally in-tune with other people's feelings. However, this can be mitigated by their intuition. This intuition allows them to eventually understand nonverbal cues and the emotional, illogical forces behind behaviors. They do not display much verbal affection or emotion, but their closeness is demonstrated by their devotion and honesty.

Because they are able to see the objective realities of any situation, they generally know what is working and what is not. They are able to steer the relationship in the right direction to promote its healthiness and depth of connection. The partners of INTJs admire their abilities to make the right decisions, whether in regards to the relationship, financial matters, or parenting.

INTJs are not afraid of ending relationships that they do not see as working. They do not linger on past relationships because they truly believe that in the long run, they have done what was best for themselves and their partner. However, their internal feelings associated with the breakup may be stronger than what they express.

Sex

INTJs enjoy thinking about sex and view it as a theoretical and creative entity rather than just as a demonstration of love and affection. Their creativity and energy is very apparent during sex. In unhealthy relationships however, they may enjoy the thought of sex more than the physical act of it.

Compatibility

Unlike Instincts compatibility, Personality compatibility is largely based on personal preference. However, general patterns do exist.

With a strong Introverted Intuition function, INTJs are better understood and appreciated by other Intuitives. With the Judging characteristic, INTJs are naturally the ones who "steer the ship". Thus, they are better paired with Perceivers, who tend to "go with the flow". Specifically, they are most suitable with those who have strong Extraverted Intuition functions, such as the ENFP and the ENTP. How this is derived can be found here.

ENFP - INTJ

ENFPs bring a new level of joy, creativity, and spontaneity to the INTJs life. By making sense of the world using their feelings, ENFPs allow INTJs to be more in touch with their own ethics and sense of humanity. INTJs' natural decision-making skills provide ENFPs with stability and direction, especially in logical matters. By analyzing ideas that are interesting to ENFPs, INTJs provide deep insights and well-developed thoughts that ENFPs enjoy exploring.

ENTP - INTJ

ENTPs bring spontaneity and creative ways to interact with the world to the INTJ. They provide the INTJ with novel, intellectual ideas to analyze. INTJs' natural decision-making skills provide ENTPs with stability and direction, especially in logical matters. By analyzing ideas that are interesting to ENFPs, INTJs provide deep insights and well-developed thoughts that ENTPs enjoy exploring.

Instincts and Myers Briggs

Project Evolove's Instincts determine two people's compatibility while Myers-Briggs typology determines their day-to-day interactions. Although MBTI matchmaking is a popular concept, it does not accurately predict compatibility when used without Instincts.

How INTJs relate to other Types

INTJ: Identity - They are the same types. Feeling like they are competing in the same space, the two may initially oppose each other. However, they usually recognize their similarities and begin to cooperate.

ENTJ: Pal - Similar worldviews, goals, and thoughts. The Introvert is more original while the Extravert is better at implementing ideas and plans. They get along at work and at play.

INTP: Complement - They have interests in similar realms but their strengths have opposite emphasis. They solve the same problem with different approaches and for different reasons.

ENTP: Contrast - They have the same order of functions but the Introvert/Extravert direction of each function is reversed. They have similar interests but the Perceiver thinks of possibilities while the Judger thinks of plans. They have different goals and opposite emphasis in strengths.

ISFP: Supplement -They have the same functions in different order. One's weaker strengths are the other's stronger strengths. Their strengths can add to each other.

ESFP: Anima - They have the same functions but in reverse order. Each sees the other as having strengths that the former wishes to improve upon.

ISTP: Suitemate - The two enjoy the same environment and have little interpersonal friction. They do not have anything in common but can enjoy everyday activities together.

ESTP: Cohort - The two find each other in the same activities only when one is stressed out and wishes to "escape" from normalcy.

INFJ: Companion - They have the same primary function. The two have a mutual understanding of each other and can talk on a deep, honest level.

ENFJ: Tribesman - They have similar cultures and are often found in the same social groups. They have different strengths and will be pursuing goals independent of each other.

INFP: Advisor - Each has insight that the other lacks. They find each other to be a source of fresh perspectives and enjoy each other's company.

ENFP: Pedagogue - Each has insight and strength that the other lacks. They develop a parent-child relationship.

ISFJ: Enigma - They are complete mysteries to each other. They have different goals and strengths.

ESFJ: Novelty - Their differences are so striking that they are curious about each other. They sometimes run into conflict due to their fundamental differences in worldview.

ISTJ: Neighbor - The two are often found in the same jobs or walks of life, but they reached their position through completely different means.

ESTJ: Counterpart - The two perform the same functions but are in different realms. They have mutual respect for each other but do not necessarily wish they had the same skillset as the other.

INTJs As a Parent

INTJs see their children as a major focus in their life and thoroughly enjoy the parenting process. They devote much thought and effort into turning their children into intelligent, independent, free-thinking adults. While they provide consistent structure and discipline, they promote their children's individuality and allow their children to choose their own life direction. The INTJ parent may challenge their children's decisions at major points in their growth to make sure they are on the right path.

INTJs do well academically and are usually found in jobs that provide upwards mobility. Naturally good at planning, they are responsible at managing their finances.

INTJ Occupations

INTJs thrive in positions that demand theoretical analysis and solitary concentration. They enjoy solving big-picture challenges and devising original plans that other people can execute. Projects that allow them to plan and design the future are ideal. They prefer to have control over their own schedules and standards of success. They find unnecessary socializing to be tiresome, and would only call upon other's expertise when needed.  They strongly dislike inefficiencies caused by politics and interpersonal issues. Seeking perpetual growth in their ability to solve new challenges, they wish to become experts in their field.
