ISTP - Crafter

Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Perceptive

ISTPs are interested in the art of action. They aim to achieve perfection in each action they perform. Likewise, they like to understand how other entities, such as machines, execute action. Extremely logical in practical matters, they are able to dissect an entity to understand its workings. Keenly in-tune with their five senses, they can recall sensorial experiences vividly, such as visual landmarks or tactile maneuvers.

They crave freedom, ignoring external rules and authority. Optimistic and adventurous, some are drawn to risky activities such as rock climbing. Their strong logic and technical skills make them excellent engineers, craftsmen, personal trainers, athletes, and soldiers.

As Introverted Thinkers, they may appear distant and "hard to get". Because they are highly in-tune with their environments, they tend to carry a particular physical attractiveness. In relationships, they live for the experience of each moment. They are happiest in relationships that provide them with new experiences and a sense of freedom.  While they do not express their emotions, they can feel intense, overpowering love for their partners.

Unlike Instincts compatibility, Personality compatibility is largely based on personal preference. However, general patterns do exist. Many ISTPs find themselves to be most compatible with ESTJs and ENTJs. Generally speaking, they prefer long-term relationships with Thinking and Judging types. More on compatibility can be found under the "In Relationships" tab.

About 5% of the U.S. population is ISTP.

ISTP Personality

Crafter

ISTPs are interested in the art of action. They aim to achieve perfection in each action they perform. The impulse and ritual of the action drive them more so than the purpose. Likewise, they like to understand how other entities, such as machines, execute action. Extremely logical in practical matters, ISTPs are able to dissect a mechanical or conceptual entity step-by-step to understand its workings.

Keenly in-tune with their five senses, they can recall sensorial experiences vividly. For instance, they may have exceptional visual memories that allow them to remember landmarks with startlingly accuracy, or tactile memories that allow them to perfect complicated physical maneuvers. In addition, they are able to grasp the details of their physical environments quickly. This gives them swift reflexes and strong technical skills.

Optimistic and adventurous, they are drawn to risky activities that require perfection in action, such as rock climbing or flying airplanes, as well as activities that require patience and technique, such as hunting or building machines. When they have become proficient at an art form, they automate its essential actions so that they can focus on improvising solutions to new challenges using their storehouse of knowledge and memories.

ISTPs crave freedom. Ignoring external rules and authority, they live according to their own laws, which they follow scrupulously. In school, ISTPs may rebel against its rigid structure and lack of direct application, although they typically understand the subject matters quite well. Paradoxically, the ISTPs who have embraced and internalized the practical applications of school become the most organized, efficient, and punctual students.

Because they set their own laws, they travel the path no one else has traveled, both literally and figuratively. They are patient and calm most of the time, but launched into motion when an adventure presents itself.

They strongly believe that all people should be treated fairly. They are patient and willing to listen to others' perspectives, but will always interpret truths through their own system of laws. They are extremely faithful, trusting, and generous to their buddies, for loyalty is a virtue. They typically have no desire to control others, unless it is on the immediate forefront of action, in which their expediency and ability to see immediate opportunities make them very effective leaders.

When over-stressed, ISTPs may become overwhelmed by their emotions. They may feel compelled to inappropriately share their worries with people or may experience outbursts of anger. Other ISTPs choose to withdraw from others in order to think things through. In this situation, they may lose contact with even their closest friends.

The logic of the ISTP combined with their technical skills make them excellent engineers, craftsmen, personal trainers, athletes, and soldiers. They are the troubleshooters of our society, solving problems using the tools available.

ISTP Relationships

Crafter

Before a Relationship

As Introverted Thinkers, they may appear distant and "hard to get". Meanwhile, because they are highly in-tune with their environments, they are usually physically fit and move with grace. As a result, ISTPs exude a particular attractiveness to potential mates.

During a Relationship

In relationships, they live for the experience of each moment. Personal space is very important for an ISTP. They detest routine and schedules set by someone else. They are happiest in relationships that provide them with new experiences and a sense of freedom.  Alternatively, if ISTPs wish to remain in a relationship with someone who will not provide that environment, they may need to find spontaneity in their lives through other means. In relationships that become stagnant, they will attempt to fix it before moving on.

ISTPs are hesitant about commitment. Only after working out all of the potential flaws in the relationship will they be able to create a foundation in their mind justifying their commitment. Typically, they only commit when they are able to value and accept their partner's life pursuit as their own. When they have decided so, they will commit in totality.

When ISTPs interact with other people, they are usually gathering information rather than sharing. They tend to hold back their own opinions and may even evade questions by asking questions. This tendency may be frustrating to their partners, who may feel like they are never seeing the ISTP fully. One reason is that their decision-making-process is internal and they do not feel the need to expose their views. Another reason is that they wish to protect their feelings, as they are unaccustomed to dealing with their emotions and are quite vulnerable in that regards.

In fact, ISTPs do not trust decisions made based on feelings. They sometimes ignore their feelings entirely, for they have difficulty distinguishing emotions from value judgments. Likewise, they de-emphasize the validity of other people's decisions made based on feelings.

While they do not express their emotions, ISTPs can feel intense, overpowering love for their partners on the inside. They experience their love, as well as other aspects of their lives, on a day by day basis. In other words, they may be deeply in love one day but show none of it the next. This type of behavior may be difficult to understand by most types.

Sex

Sex is a physical act to the ISTP rather than an expression of affection. Like other physical maneuvers in their lives, ISTPs wish to perfect sex. They enthusiastically bring spontaneity and creativity into their intimacy while constantly improving their technique. Keenly in-tune with their five senses, they are particular about aesthetic beauty, such as the physical features of their partners and their environments.

Compatibility

Unlike Instincts compatibility, Personality compatibility is largely based on personal preference. However, general patterns do exist.

With a strong Introverted Thinking function, ISTPs are better understood and appreciated by other Thinkers. With the Perceiving characteristic, ISTPs are naturally the ones who "see all the possibilities". Thus, they are better paired with Judgers, who can "pick the right choices".  Specifically, they are most suitable with those who have strong Extraverted Thinking functions, such as the ESTJ and the ENTJ. How this is derived can be found here.

ISTP - ESTJ

ISTPs provide ESTJs with unique ways to solve problems and a different source of logical evaluation. Independent and respectful of other people's space, ISTPs allow ESTJs to be themselves in a mutually respectful relationship. ESTJs take into consideration the ISTPs' observations to make better decisions. ESTJs allow ISTPs to freely pursue their interests while maintaining a stable, well-maintained environment.

ISTP - ENTJ

ISTPs provide ENTJs with unique ways to solve problems and a different source of analysis. Independent and respectful of other people's space, ISTPs allow ENTJs to be themselves in a mutually respectful relationship. ENTJs analyze the ISTPs' observations and turn them into plans of action. ENTJs allow ISTPs to freely pursue their interests while maintaining a stable, growth-oriented environment.

How ISTPs relate to other Types

ISTP: Identity - They are the same types. Feeling like they are competing in the same space, the two may initially oppose each other. However, they usually recognize their similarities and begin to cooperate.

ESTP: Pal - Similar worldviews, goals, and thoughts. The Introvert is more original while the Extravert is better at implementing ideas and plans. They get along at work and at play.

ISTJ: Complement - They have interests in similar realms but their strengths have opposite emphasis. They solve the same problem with different approaches and for different reasons.

ESTJ: Contrast - They have the same order of functions but the Introvert/Extravert direction of each function is reversed. They have similar interests but the Perceiver thinks of possibilities while the Judger thinks of plans. They have different goals and opposite emphasis in strengths.

INFJ: Supplement -They have the same functions in different order. One's weaker strengths are the other's stronger strengths. Their strengths can add to each other.

ENFJ: Anima - They have the same functions but in reverse order. Each sees the other as having strengths that the former wishes to improve upon.

INTJ: Suitemate - The two enjoy the same environment and have little interpersonal friction. They do not have anything in common but can enjoy everyday activities together.

ENTJ: Cohort - The two find each other in the same activities only when one is stressed out and wishes to "escape" from normalcy.

ISFP: Companion - They have the same primary function. The two have a mutual understanding of each other and can talk on a deep, honest level.

ESFP: Tribesman - They have similar cultures and are often found in the same social groups. They have different strengths and will be pursuing goals independent of each other.

ISFJ: Advisor - Each has insight that the other lacks. They find each other to be a source of fresh perspectives and enjoy each other's company.

ESFJ: Pedagogue - Each has insight and strength that the other lacks. They develop a parent-child relationship.

INFP: Enigma - They are complete mysteries to each other. They have different goals and strengths.

ENFP: Novelty - Their differences are so striking that they are curious about each other. They sometimes run into conflict due to their fundamental differences in worldview.

INTP: Neighbor - The two are often found in the same jobs or walks of life, but they reached their position through completely different means.

ENTP: Counterpart - The two perform the same functions but are in different realms. They have mutual respect for each other but do not necessarily wish they had the same skillset as the other.

ISTPs As Parents

ISTPs are likely to provide a free, unstructured environment for their children. While they are quite effective at administering discipline, they rarely have the motivation to do so. In addition, preferring to maintain some distance between themselves and their children, they are rarely involved in their children's day-to-day affairs. Their mates are usually the ones providing the structure and care. ISTPs prefer to bond with their child one-on-one, through activities such as going fishing. Rather than passing down values, they often pass down their hobbies and perspectives.

ISTP Occupations

ISTPs enjoy careers where they can become the masters of the craft. Their logic and knowledge are most suitable for work that requires technical knowledge of specific systems. They feel most energetic when they can think on their feet, troubleshooting challenges as they arise. They prefer practical, hands-on work, in which they can see tangible results. They like to work independently and at their own pace, although they like the camaraderie of other skilled people whom they respect.
